Rev. Jacob Memorial Christian College (RJMCC) is part of a group of Christian institutions run by a ‘not for profit’ society, in central Tamil Nadu. This society has for the last 5 decades been involved in providing very low cost healthcare and high quality education for 3 to 4 rural districts of Tamil Nadu. These institutions were started by a cardio-thoracic surgeon trained in Newcastle, England in the 1960s. On his return to India, he relinquished a lucrative city practice destined for a ‘UK returned’ cardiac surgeon in the 60s, and set up his medical practice among the homeless, landless, debt ridden villagers & farmers of Dindugal/Palani region. He & his wife then spent their entire lives with the underprivileged and completely transformed the whole area. For these colossal services he rendered to the nation, Dr Jacob Cherian was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1999. By the time of his death in 2007, he had started 18 institutions in all, and yet did not hold even a single, personal bank account.
Currently this society continues to run most of these institutions including a 350-bed hospital, a 1500 student Engineering College, and has approx. 5500 students studying within its campuses at any given time, with many IAS officers, politicians, engineers & doctors having risen from them. During its 50-year existence, several eminent personalities have visited our institutions including Shri. K. R. Narayanan as the Vice-President twice. Over these 50 years this hospital has served approx. 4.11 million patients just in its outpatient dept and treated over 4 lakh cancer patients, many of them free of cost.
Rev. Jacob Memorial Christian College started in 1997, on a 7-acre scenic campus, provides unique opportunities to this rural area on a scale never seen before and already offers ten UG & two PG programs.
